Robot Halloween Costume

This is probably the last year I'll make a costume for Alistair.  Not that I wouldn't like to, but boy costumes seem to be stormtroopers or other things I just can't make.  There just aren't many boy costume patterns in the books.  I had a difficult time finding this robot costume.  I noticed it in the pattern book last year and thought it was cute.  When Alistair said he wanted to be a robot, I thought perfect, I know just the pattern.  But when I went to look for it in the book, the pattern wasn't there.  I found the pattern number on line (McCallls MP313) and then looked in the drawer at JoAnn Fabrics just on the off chance it was there.  It was!  The slippery metallic fabric I used on the body was difficult to work with,  I was worried not only that I wouldn't finish by Halloween, but also that I wouldn't finish before I had the baby.  Not to worry, the baby is late and the costume was finished ahead of schedule.  I just never got around to putting the silver disks on the sides of the helmet, or adding the antennae.

Pirate Themed Birthday Party

It's birthday season in our household.  Today we had a joint birthday party for our two kiddos.  I made a treasure map birthday cake.  The sand is made from graham crackers and brown sugar.  I put gold doubloons around the edge.  I tried to decorate on top of the sand, but the buttercream icing wasn't sticking to the sand, so I cute up pieces of black licorice for the dashed lines.

We had pirate snacks as well.  Cannonballs, barnacles, pirate gold, pirate rope, fish and chips (goldfish and potato chips), and fruit swords.  I also made balloon swords for the kids.  We had fun and it wasn't too much work.
